As we said Bodrum is a center for the building of gulets, the wood-made yachts of our region. Every year several of these beautiful boats are launched in Bodrum and surroundings. Orders are increasing and the gulets are exported to many places. Today they are sailing the Caribbean sea, near the Maldives etc.
Tradition of gullet building reaches back at least 2500 years. History tells us of Karian queen Artemis, who commanded a fleet of those ships in the battle of Salamis, and it is said that these ships were built in Halikarnassos - which was the name of Bodrum in the Antique. The naval tradition of Karians and Dorians, which settled and lived together in this part of Anatolia and which launched ships even for Egyptian tyrants, shows the importance of Halikarnassos' shipbuilding technique. In the Ottoman centuries Bodrum built ships for the Sultan's fleet. It is told that in 1793 portmaster captain Mehmet and his men were put in prison, because two ships under their responsibility came into distress and sank. Historic references from 19th century prove the building in Bodrum of several gulets with a length of over 30 meters, each of them equipped with 80 cannons. Yachtbuilding in Bodrum profits from that tradition and refers to it.
